요즘 들어 내 머리를 사로잡고 있는 두 가지 난제가 있다. 넓이와 깊이의 문제! 우선 이 시대가 요구는 지식은 과연 넓은 지식일까, 깊은 지식일까? 물론 넓고 깊은 지식을 한꺼번에 가질 수 있다면야 더할 나위가 없겠지만, 나는 나의 한계를 알기 때문에 감히 두마리 토끼를 잡을 수 있다고는 말을 못하겠다. 이러한 현실적인 지점에서 나의 고민은 시작되었다. 그리고 선택의 문제! 과연 내가 선택을 하는 것일까, 선택하도록 조종을 당하는 것일까? 나는 선택의 진정한 주체일 것일까, 아니면 의도된 선택을 하는 단순한 행위자에 불과한 것일까? 스탠리 피쉬와 에드워드 사이드의 위 인용들은 나에게 이 두 문제에 대한 시사점을 주는 동시에 또다른 문제를 제기한다. 머리를 쥐어뜯을 시간이 더 필요한가 보다. 끝이 보이지 않는 고민의 여정!
